In a recent article from the Wausau Pilot & Review, ANTHONY BAKER LIDDLE (ANTHONY B LIDDLE, TONY LIDDLE), a former Wisconsin broker/investment advisor, was charged by the US Department of Justice with defrauding clients out of approximately $1.9 million. Liddle is facing federal prison, after criminal charges were filed against him last week. One day after a SEC complaint was filed in the U.S. Western District Court of Wisconsin, the US Department of Justice filed felony fraud and money laundering charges against ANTHONY B LIDDLE. According to reports, Liddle allegedly pleaded guilty one day later to both charges. Liddle faces up to 40 years in prison, $740,000 in fines, and restitution to his victims of approximately $1.9 million.
According to the article, ANTHONY B LIDDLE owned Prosper Wealth Management in Rhinelander and Wausau, Wisconsin. Liddle was barred by FINRA in April of 2022. There were more than a dozen clients, many of them elderly, who lost money in Liddle’s alleged scheme.
The Wausau Pilot & Review article sites examples of Liddle’s alleged schemes. In one example cited, in December of 2021, Liddle allegedly went to a nursing home to meet a client, and he handwrote notes outlining her investment plan allegedly guaranteeing the safety of a bond he knew to be high risk. Liddle allegedly then took a check for $110,000 and never invested the elderly woman’s money. ANTHONY B LIDDLE is also accused of having his clients send money to his management firm to purchase new investments, but according to the article, the firm did not maintain custody of advisory client funds, and there was no reason for clients to send funds directly to the firm. Liddle then opened a bank account in Prosper Wealth Management’s name and hid the account from his other employees. This secret account was used to deposit advisory client funds that he allegedly had no intention of investing which Liddle used to fund his lifestyle.
According to Federal court records ANTHONY B LIDDLE filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in November of 2022 where he listed more than $3 million in debt, including more than $400,000 in business and personal credit card debt, more than $200,000 in money owed to a local landlord for his Wausau office rent, and restitution to 13 individuals.
