A client's attorney alleged that the covered call option strategy John Alex used was unsuitable for her because the underlying stock continued to increase in value. In a covered call strategy, an investor sells call options on stock already held, collecting premium income but giving up gains above the strike price if the stock keeps rising. The complaint was filed November 6, 2024 and named Morgan Stanley.
The claimant alleged $1,625,000 in damages, and the dispute settled for $425,000 on February 14, 2025.
The earliest dispute naming John Alex was filed July 8, 2010 under docket number 10-03015 against UBS Financial Services. It alleged $155,602 in damages and settled for $24,900 on May 25, 2011.
In a dispute filed March 23, 2012 under docket number 12-00786, a claimant couple alleged Alex concentrated them in high yield mutual funds and preferred stock tied to the real estate market, with damages alleged at $500,000. Concentration claims like this one allege that too much of an account was placed in one type of investment. It settled for $62,500 on November 6, 2012, and BrokerCheck lists the product as equity and stock. The firm said in a statement that the matter settled for business reasons and not due to any wrongdoing by Alex, and that he was not asked to contribute to the settlement.
A later dispute naming UBS, filed March 18, 2013 under docket number 13-00562, alleged $2,000,000 in damages, the largest amount claimed against John Alex. That matter settled for $250,000 on February 18, 2015.
