Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Ordered to Pay Clients $825,000 by FINRA

A Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) arbitration panel ordered Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, LLC, on February 1, 2016, to pay $825,000 to two of their clients. The $825,000 award represents $660,000 in compensatory damages, and $165,000 in punitive damages and interest.
The FINRA arbitration panel found Morgan Stanley’s hiring process was insufficient. The panel felt the financial advisor was the cause of the losses that were incurred by their clients. The evidence presented to the FINRA arbitration panel showed that the Morgan Stanley broker, Anna Khai (a.k.a. Anna Khatchatrian) borrowed money and solicited Morgan Stanley clients to invest in non-approved investments.
