Investing in the oil and gas industry carries significant risks. Investors should fully grasp the risks before making investments in oil and gas.  Price volatility is one of the largest risks associated with oil and gas investments. The supply and demand of oil and geopolitical events can cause oil and gas prices to fluctuate, which impacts the stocks of these companies.  When brokers/financial advisors consider recommending oil and gas stocks to their clients they should consider the client’s investment goals, risk tolerance and their portfolio diversification.

Your broker/financial advisor may have recommended investing in risky oil and gas stocks, that may not have been suitable for the conservative, retired investor which resulted in serious losses. Oil and gas stocks can be very risky, especially to clients with low to moderate risk tolerance in their portfolios.  Your broker has an obligation to explain these risks to you before you invest.  This can also be devastating to clients’ irreplaceable retirement funds.
