ROSEMARY TAVERNA Referenced In Commonwealth Financial Network Investor Dispute

Soreide Law Group is reviewing potential claims of misconduct, including unsuitable alternative investment sales, against Commonwealth Financial Network securities broker Rosemary Taverna (CRD#: 1244454, Greenwich, Connecticut). Specifically, Taverna shows on her Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) BrokerCheck Profile that an investor disputed her sales practices. Here is a summary of the matter involving Taverna:

Rosemary Taverna Subject Of June 15, 2017 Arbitration Alleging Unsuitable Alternative Investments

As reported on FINRA BrokerCheck, a customer of Commonwealth Financial Network filed FINRA Arbitration #17-01501. Mainly, the customer indicated in the June 15, 2017 Arbitration that Rosemary Taverna sold the customer unsuitable alternative investments. According to the customer, Rosemary Taverna sold real estate securities, equipment leasing products, and oil & gas investments. Apparently, these investments were not appropriate in terms of the customer’s ability and intent to invest in the risky investments. Because of this, the customer alleged $1,500,000 in damages in this ongoing matter.

Rosemary Taverna’s Potentially Unsuitable Alternative Investments

Alternative investments are unlike typical investments in stocks and bonds. The investments Rosemary Taverna supposedly sold the customer are alternative investments. Additionally, real property commodities, venture capital, and hedge funds are alternative investments. It is important to realize that those products often do not contain SEC’s regulatory oversight, and can contain high risks and complicated structures. Also, those investments often contain high fees and minimum investments, unlike ETFs and mutual funds. For this reason, some brokers sell alternative investments that are not suitable for investors.
FINRA Rule 2111, which governs suitability, requires that brokerage firms and their securities brokers have a reasonable basis to believe the investments they recommend are suitable for the investor. When brokers do not conduct reasonable due diligence on the investments or lack an understanding of the customer’s investment profile, they may end up selling an investor an unsuitable investment.
